What do we do with the truths we know?

Knowledge is important—but it is only part of the equation in our spiritual development. Our happiness in mortality and our progress throughout eternity depend on our learning to "act in doctrine," to live as we know we should live.

In Act in Doctrine, Elder David A. Bednar shares key insights to help close the gap between what we know and how we act. "The essential first step in reducing the disparity between gospel knowledge and righteous behavior is learning about and emulating the character of Christ," he writes.

As we turn from self to to the Savior, we become better able to understand respond to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Obedience becomes "the sweet fruit of honoring covenant responsibilities—not merely a chore or an option to be performed based upon circumstances or convenience." This is a stirring invitation to all of us to learn, ponder, and Act in Doctrine.

Act in Doctrine edition by David A Bednar Religion Spirituality eBooks

This book can be a life changing! Elder Bednar explains in clear terms the difference between testimony and conversion (there is a difference!), and he often refers to the Savior's life as a completely unselfish life concerned only with doing the Father's will and serving others, even while under the most extreme trials. He calls this turning outward, not inward. He explains that the natural man turns inward (is selfish), but we covenant to represent Jesus Christ at baptism, and thus we must learn to turn outward in all circumstances as well. Elder Bednar is careful to point out that we can only do this through the enabling power of Jesus Christ, and it happens slowly, line upon line, precept upon precept as the scriptures describe. The DVD that is included with the book was just wonderful. It is an hour long question and answer session with Elder Bednar on these and other topics. He includes many tips on how to become a better teacher as well. I highly recommend studying this wonderful volume written by a special witness for Christ.

Act in Doctrine edition by David A Bednar Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is another great book in the Bednar tradition. I was unable to access the supplemental clips since I am in a third world country but I very much enjoyed reading this as an Ebook. Now if I could just put into practice what I read! A worthwhile reading endeavor, very insightful and thought provoking.
The book is awesome, and the links to his discussions are amazing. He speaks to small audiences about his chapters, and in the moment he speaks to them with such clarity when they ask questions. I have rewatched the video links a couple of times.
Excellent insights into the doctrine of Christ! So much to learn from these teachings. Elder Bednar teaches in a way that is easy to understand and so applicable to everyone! I love this book!
This is an LDS based book, written by one of the 12 Apostles of the LDS church, but the advise and guidance taught is certain applicable to anyone seeking to have more peace in their life. David Bednar write in an easy to understand and comforting manner.
Great book by David Bednar. I was looking for books that would really help me teach gospel doctrine (which is much harder than teaching academics). This book along with Increase in Learning by David Bednar helped me. It is written in a very simplistic manner and it is fantastic that it comes with activities to do. Will highly recommend to anyone who teach Sunday School or Church classes!
The only problem I had with this book is that it is not interactive on the regular kindle only on the kindle fire. I did watch the dvd on my computer but it is not as interactive to keep turning the dvd and off and then reading part of the book. This setup worked very well on the kindle fire.
I read David A. Bednar's first book, Increase in Learning and loved it. I like this one even better. It's the application of what he discussed in his first book. For Latter-day Saints, it is a wonderful tool to help you put your religious doctrines to practice. If you are not LDS you may still find wonderful insights on practicing what we believe as followers of Jesus Christ. If you have a nasty comment to add, ask yourself why you think that is necessary. If you don't believe the way we do, please enjoy material more suited to your beliefs or lack thereof.
