It's fun to read and @TheNerdyTeacher doesn't take himself too seriously, using pop-culture examples to make his points. There are plenty of places to write your notes and thoughts as you go through the book, and he leaves room at the end for some 'maker prompts' to get you thinking about creative making.I enjoyed it and would recommend it to newcomers.

The best part about this book... is it the awesome tips? The pop culture references? The stories? It's ALLl of these things! But what makes the book most special is how Nick's voice can be heard throughout it encouraging us to try new things, think big for students, and not to be afraid to step out of our comfort zones. This book is for anyone who's toying with the idea of Makerspaces and hasn't yet taken the plunge. Nick's positive demeanor and warmth shine through every word. Read it and share it!
As a former child that loved to create and build, and an adult that still does, I can confidently proclaim that makerspaces are a great idea (I even did so in the headline for this review). Not every kid has a garage full of stuff, a craft closet, broken Betamax players, or even empty cardboard tubes sitting around waiting to be made into ten kinds of awesome. As educators, not only can we provide these spaces for students, we must. Students deserve every opportunity to explore, create, learn, and show us just how awesome they truly are and (spoiler alert) many kids just so happen to be awesome Makers. Nicholas literally wrote the book on getting started (it's this book that I'm currently reviewing). The book is fun, full of great stories and pop culture references, but most importantly it shows teachers how to get started on creating a great makerspace in their school or classroom. So go ahead, get this book, create a makerspace, be awesome, and let your students be awesome making stuff. You know you want to. Seriously, you do. Your students will thank you.
The book is well-intentioned, but I felt like the information found in this book could easily be gleaned by reading blog posts. Maybe it would be helpful to read if you had literally no knowledge of making. I was disappointed that there wasn't more meat to this book. (I would've given it one star, but 's automatic caption of "I hate it." seemed harsh to me.)
Easy read with lots of good ideas and thought-provoking sections. There are places included to write down your own ideas and thoughts.

I'm a fan of Nicholas Provenzano but I found this book anti-climatic. . .unless you've never heard of makerspace or haven't found anything in the zillion of blog posts and other resources. I'm thrilled he's so excited about makerspace and "making," but I wish he'd reassured some of the veteran teachers that what we're calling "making" is an extension of what we used to call "hands-on." Maybe the tools and resources have changed, but striving to find ways for students to experience learning in hands-on, authentic ways has not.
This is one of the absolute BEST Makerspace books out there! It is practical, funny, and interactive. What? An interactive book? YES! Whether you are just starting out on your Makerspace adventure or a seasoned veteran guiding others through the adventure, it is a must!
